Huntington Bank has a robust selection of banking products, including checking, savings, money market, and CD accounts. While some of these accounts come with relationship benefits -- like waived account fees and increased interest rates -- the bank's APYs are unimpressive and rank low among banks.

Huntington Bank

Bottom Line

Huntington Bank isn't the right choice for everyone. Its rates on savings accounts and CDs are low, it only operates in 11 states, and it doesn't have a wide ATM network. It might be worth considering if you want to bank all in one place. Otherwise, you can find better rates at an online bank.

Savings accounts

Huntington Bank has two savings accounts. Both have relational benefits, but neither one can rival the high yields on today's best savings accounts. Even so, Huntington Bank savings accounts showcase some standout features, such as the following:

In light of these features, let's delve into each account separately and see what it has to offer.

Huntington® Premier Savings

This is Huntington's basic savings account. It has a $50 minimum opening deposit and a $4 monthly maintenance fee, which you can waive by pairing it with a Huntington checking account or keeping a daily minimum balance of $300. The account has a rock-bottom APY of 0.01%, ranking it among the worst paying savings accounts in today's high interest rate market.

Huntington® Relationship Savings

This savings account has a $10 monthly maintenance fee, which is waivable if you pair it with a Huntington Perks Checking℠ or Huntington Platinum Perks Checking℠ account. Alternatively, you could waive the fee by maintaining a $2,500 average daily balance.

As the name suggests, the Huntington® Relationship Savings has relational benefits. When you pair your savings account with a Huntington Perks Checking℠ or Huntington Platinum Perks Checking℠ account, not only will you pay no fees but your APY will inch up ever so slightly. It inches up again for Huntington Private Client account holders.

Certificates of deposit

Perhaps the most exciting offer from Huntington Bank is its promotional certificates of deposit (CDs). Currently, Huntington Bank has two lucrative CD terms: a 7-month CD with a 5.13%% APY and an 11-month CD with a 4.86%% APY. The minimum opening deposit is $1,000, which is standard for high-yield CDs. Unfortunately, you can only open CDs in-person at a Huntington Bank branch, as there's no option to open one online.

The bank also has an array of standard rate CDs, with terms ranging from one to 72 months. The savings rates on these CDs, however, are extremely low and would be a bad investment when compared with today's top-paying CDs.

Huntington Bank Promotional CD Bottom Line

Unlike Huntington Bank's standard CD offerings, its two promotional CDs offer excellent APYs that are very competitive with other CDs currently on the market.

Huntington Bank Standard CD Bottom Line

Huntington Bank offers a huge selection of standard CD rate terms, but the APYs are so small that you could definitely find better CD rates, savings account rates, and other banking account product rates that far outpace what Huntington Bank offers for its standard CDs.

Checking accounts

At Huntington Bank, you'll find an extensive selection of checking accounts -- some free, others with waivable fees. Like the bank's savings account, its checking accounts also share some standout features, such as the following.

Bearing these features in mind, let's look closer at each checking account individually.

Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking®

The Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking® is a free, no-frills checking account. It doesn't earn interest, but it also has no monthly fees, no minimum balances, and no minimum opening deposit requirements.

Huntington Perks Checking℠

If the Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking® looks boring, you might want to consider the Huntington Perks Checking℠.

This account earns some interest and also covers the fees on five non-Huntington ATM withdrawals per statement cycle (normally a $3.50 charge). The account has a $10 monthly maintenance fee, which you can waive by making $1,000 in monthly deposits or keeping $5,000 in total relationship balances. Opening a Huntington Perks Checking℠ account also unlocks higher interest rates on the Huntington® Relationship Savings account and Huntington Relationship Money Market Account.

Huntington Platinum Perks Checking℠

The Huntington Platinum Perks Checking℠ has a higher interest rate than its Perks Checking account, plus unlimited non-Huntington ATM withdrawals and free checks. The maintenance fee is pretty high ($25), but waivable if you maintain $25,000 in total relationship balances. The relationship benefits can be super sweet and include better APYs, special mortgage rates, and 100 commission-free online equity and ETF trades per year.

Huntington SmartInvest Checking℠

This is an exclusive checking account that's offered to Huntington's high-net-worth clients. To qualify, you must maintain at least $100,000 in total relationship balances and have a Managed Investment account.

This account has no fees whatsoever. That includes no monthly maintenance, overdraft, wire, money movement, and fees on other Huntington Bank accounts. It also has unlimited ATM withdrawals at non-Huntington ATMs, free checks, special rates on mortgages, unlimited commission-free trades, and a free safe deposit box. Finally, opening one gives you access to the SmartInvest Money Market -- a high-yield money market account with investment options.

Customer experience

Customer service

Huntington Bank has a general customer service center that accepts calls daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET. You can also contact your local Huntington Bank, which will have its own operating hours.

Online ratings

As far as online ratings go, Huntington Bank doesn't have a perfect record. Despite getting an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau, its profile on that website has 1.14 stars out of 5, based on more than 360 reviews.

On Trustpilot, it has 1.3 stars out of 5 stars (based on 100 reviews) and on Consumer Affairs it has 2.1 stars (based on more than 400 reviews). While consumers often use third-party review sites to complain rather than praise, these low ratings are still something to consider if good customer service is important to you.

Relationship benefits

Huntington Bank offers relationship benefits on some of its accounts. These benefits could include increased interest rates, waived account fees, better interest rates on mortgages, and commission-free trades on stocks and ETFs. If you want to earn relationship benefits, the following Huntington Bank accounts might interest you:

Alternatives to Huntington Bank

If Huntington Bank isn't a good fit for you, here are a couple other banks that might have more attractive benefits.

This bank offers great APYs on savings accounts and CDs, plus a full suite of cash back credit cards, money markets, and retirement accounts. It doesn't offer relationship benefits like Huntington Bank, but its customer service has won numerous awards and it consistently ranks high in the annual J.D. Power Direct Banking Satisfaction Study.

Connexus Credit Union

If you want to support a non-profit financial institution, check out Connexus Credit Union. Connexus offers savings accounts, money market accounts, and some of the highest paying CDs on the market. Though you have to join the credit union to open an account, becoming a member is as simple as making a $5 donation to the Connexus Association.

Is Huntington Bank right for you?

Huntington Bank doesn't have the highest APYs for savings, money market, and standard CD accounts. Even so, it might be worth considering if you live near a Huntington Bank, want in-person banking services, and can maintain the appropriate balance on your account to waive fees.
